ABOUT MATT

25+ YEARS OF MARKETS. A FEW MINUTES AT A TIME.

I’m Matt Stanley. I’ve spent 25+ years in energy markets as a trader, broker and market commentator. I’ve traded physical barrels and paper markets, brokered markets and advised companies across the industry. Basically, I’ve spent a frankly unreasonable amount of my life thinking about oil.

These days I’m Head of Market Engagement at Kpler, and you’ll regularly find me talking markets on television, radio, at conferences and occasionally from the front seat of my car.

Matt’s Market Minutes came from something that had been bothering me for years.

We have more market information than we’ve ever had. But that doesn’t necessarily mean we understand markets any better.

There are prices everywhere. Charts everywhere. Headlines everywhere. Research notes long enough to require provisions. But knowing Brent is at $100 per barrel isn’t particularly useful unless you understand why it’s there. Where are the barrels moving? What’s happening to freight? Refining? Diesel? Inventories? Geopolitics? And what is the market perhaps getting completely wrong?

That’s what Matt’s Market Minutes is about.

Sometimes it’s sixty seconds. Sometimes it’s a deeper explainer. Sometimes it’s written commentary. And sometimes something happens in the oil market that requires me to stare into a camera and ask what the hell is going on.

No trading recommendations. No crystal ball. No claim that I know what happens next. Just experience, context, data and an attempt to make complicated markets make a little more sense.

Because after 25+ years in this business, one thing I’ve learned is that the number on the screen is usually the least interesting part of the story.

NOT WHAT THE PRICE IS. WHY THE PRICE IS.
